Hipster Youth Culture

I feel like such a borderline old person sometimes when I'm hypercritical of teenagers clothing- while I can accept and warm up to baseball/ raglan shirts, pink hair and sparkly make up I will never accept short-shorts in denim that allows the viewer to see the edges of someone's butt. That's just gross and sick- have some pride in yourself and don't bare your skin so much. Also in my humble and modest opinion you really shouldn't wear low-cut shirts in the daytime when your bits threaten to spill out over the edges. These opinions are all just based on what I think though and may not be for everyone but I think that when you dress too skimpy you can attract the wrong sort of attention and it's something you'd regret in the end.

Ah Winter, at least in this bitterly chilling month everyone is force to rug up for the good of their health whether they like it or not and dress modestly. For that reason, Winter is my favourite season as well as the fact I can layer clothing, snuggle into my bed sheets and sleep well and that none of my pets have died in Winter whereas it seems they have all died in Summer. There's a lot more creativity and though that does into an outfit for Winter where you can mismatch prints and have elaborate layers but in Summer, or at least for Australians you have to dress to be comfortable and I hate that sometimes.

Maybe it would be nice to abandon my individual sense of style and just become a true and fully-fledged hipster- buying short denim shirts and small black singlets as well as wearing leggings as pants with long white socks and cheap canvas shoes... YEAH RIGHT! I would disappoint my brother, myself as well as my hippy and pot-smoking Literature teacher if I abandoned my sense of self and style. Still, maybe lying next to a similarly dressed lover would be nice and having the frame tinted with odd colours from Instagram or even old 35mm film.

I'm much happier picking off vintage goodies online such as loose hanging denim shirts as well as denim jackets with alterations and long tennis socks to accentuate my long legs. At least hipsters get that much right and know how to show off their bodies in order to attract the opposite sex- not that I need that though, I'm happily tied down with the best ball and chain in the world.

Pinky Rings

It feels good to be able to look at great overseas pieces of vintage jewellery and be actually able to afford them again- this Christmas my lovely parents were very generous to both my brother and I. I felt very giddy when I spotted this gorgeous gold ring with a contrasting flower cut into the stone (going through a big black and gold phase at the moment now) and the claw setting. I was so surprised at the feminine structure of it all, what with the shoulders as well as the detail across the band. It's not often you see such thick gold used in the band of a ring as well as the great length of detail used on it. It's such a tiny size too, it would be quite tight even on my smallest finger, my none-preferred hand and on my pinky but I have sort of been interested in acquiring a pinky ring and this would be perfect- hippy and chic and very feminine and full of glamor.

Matt Smith was absolutely adorable on last year's Graham Norton Christmas show in which he wore a three piece suit as well as a pinky ring and had worn off purple nail polish. He's sort of the main motivation behind this post and while watching Doctor Who DVDs full of extra bits through read throughs he'll be wearing a pinky ring and still manage to look as manly as a sack of bricks next to a trowel and wet cement. His ring too had a rather large black face across it and while men have an easier time finding pinky rings, women do not so I really should try my best to snap up such a great vintage piece of jewellery while I am able to.

It's only recently that I've taken to claw settings but I really do love the thick detail of the shoulders, the many claws as well as the exquisite detail of the carved flower in black agate. I can see the centre of the flower and the shape of each petal as well. Cameo rings are nice but this is simply one-of-a-kind and so unique it would make your jaw drop to the floor.

I love the combination of tapestry material as well as a pink ring which looks so simple but classic as well. Anyone that knows me well would know I wear a lot of rings or used to but I do like the look of only wearing a ring on your pinky as opposed to my usual method of having a ring on the thumb and middle ring in silver. It'd be great to move more towards gold and I do have some nice Estate finds from online sellers but the decadent floral cameo ring would be the magnus opus of all my collection.

Floral Wreaths

What better way to reign sovereign over the realm of nature than while wearing a crown of flowers shaped in a wreath? I've lusted over a crown of fake flowers for a while now, but I haven't been able to find anything suitable- not even on eBay while searching all manor of words to aid me in my search. I saw one vintage reseller sell a cool one a year or two ago now and I should have snapped it up but I didn't have the money at the time. Being reminded of losses on eBay are what spur me and push myself to accept every shift I'm offered- preventing being in the poor house as much as I can. This is why I'm so jealous of stylists, they have access to a series of great fashion accessories and pieces to bring out the best in a collection while I'm here, sitting at home and stuck with squat.

Still though, it's not all doom and gloom. I may not be even able to view all the lovely photographs of other fortunate girls adorned in floral wreaths. Now that's the kind of thing that would really bring you down when sitting around with spare time on your hands during Summer holidays. I think that if I were able to get my hands on the raw materials of fake flowers and their stems, I may have a slim chance of being able to figure out how it all fits together to make a crown as it were. I would love to do it wit real flowers, but the practice is time consuming and the flowers die after a few short hours as a crown sitting atop my head.

There's so many beautiful photographs featuring I'm missing out on recreating due to my floral wreath withdrawal- unfortunately their a bit of an oddity and a rare item to com across. What I really need to do is do some honest-to-goodness second hand shop scouring for pieces of such finesse and quirk. Everything I can find online is an ornament for a wall and not your head. It looks like if I'm to get the gypsy and natural look I'll have to source it from America or use real flowers- if only I had been alive in the sixties.

The intertwining of natural flowers and leaves on a mountainous setting at sunset- that's supposedly when magical powers are first at play progressively getting stronger till the witching hour; midnight. Fake flowers are best teamed up with a material to soften the look and make the flowers look more realistic by comparison, whereas when using real flowers I think using stems and leaves is quite charming and becoming.

I love the effect of a floral wreath arranged with matching shades of tulle and silky ribbons, the kind you would find on bridesmaids at a wedding. I like the new modern take on it though to wear it with casual attire. It makes you look like a fairy queen and more romantic- all of which are characteristics I now cherish after having undertaken Literature as a subject in my final year of high school. It was one of my more enjoyed classes too and a lot of fun. The floral wreaths and halos remind me of poems such as the Lady of Shallot as well as La Belle Dame Sans Merci.
