Fearless Threesome: Tabatha Coffey, Nick Verreos, Maria Sansome, TV Guide Network Academy Awards Countdown and Red Carpet Pre-Show Rehearsals, Hollywood & Highland Center

Well, kids, Oscars NIGHT is almost upon us--in less than 24 hours!!! Today, I had rehearsals--at the Hollywood & Highland Center for my stint as the Fashion Guru on TV Guide Network's Academy Awards Countdown to the Red Carpet and Red Carpet Shows Hosted by Chris Harrison. I will be on the "Bridge" location about 20 feet above the Oscars Red Carpet--beginning at 2 p.m. PST/5 p.m. EST on the TV Guide Network--along with Tabatha Coffey and Maria Sansone. We had rehearsals today and they went really well!!!

I'm so excited to be doing the show with them--and of course, the rest of the TV Guide Network Academy Awards Red Carpet Coverage team, including our Host, the one-and-only Chris Harrison, as well as Mark Istook, Carly Steel and our "Fashion Wraps" host Ali Landry.

Hollywood Blvd. and the formerly-known-as-the-Kodak Theater was all abuzz today with lots of press, lots of other Entertainment TV Rehearsals (Tabatha and I ran into Kelly Osborne on our way to our bridge location!) and tourists galore (on the Blvd. naturally!).
Guess who I also ran into today?

Runway Reunion: Project Runway Mentor Tim Gunn and Project Runway Judge--and Marie Claire Fashion Director--and my Colombian Diva Fantasy Sister--Nina Garcia!!!! They were rehearsing just below us for their stint tomorrow afternoon on the Academy Awards Red Carpet

Rehearsal Ladies: Tabatha Coffey and Maria Sansone, Hollywood & Highland Center above the Academy Awards red carpet

Red Carpet Report: "The Smurfs in 3D" World Premiere

"The Smurfs in 3D" Movie Premiere BLUE Carpet:

Katy Perry in a Custom The Blonds corset (with her character in crystals across the front) and matching White Ruffle Skirt

"The Smurfs in 3D" Movie Premiere occurred in NYC on Sunday at the Ziegfield Theater. Naturally instead of a Red Carpet, it was Blue...Smurf Blue! Miss Katy Perry attended wearing a custom crystal strapless bustier dress designed by The Blonds (Phillipe & David Blond, NYC-based fashion and costume designers for Kylie, Beyoncé, Miley, Adam Lambert, Britney). They created other looks for Miss Katy in the past but this one had a very special sequined "Smurfette" emblazoned across the front. I thought she looked very cute! Loved her hair and make-up as well as her Blue Louboutins!

Actress Jayma Mays wore a very simple apple-green strapless mini-dress by NYC-based designer (and red carpet fave) Reem Acra. Very apropos for the event and quite striking.

"Modern Family" Latina-Fabulosa, Sofia Vergara showed up in a floor-length violet-colored strapless gown from Missoni Resort 2012, featuring hints of that fashion house's iconic "zig-zag" print motif.

And then...Guess who was also there? Yep, that's Tim Gunn!! With The Smurfs!! Oh Tim, he just finished taping the newest season (Season 9) of Project Runway which begins airing this Thursday night on Lifetime. Tim's BIG ear-to-ear smile lets me know he probably was just happy it was all over!!! Those 14-hour shoot days can get to you! (trust me, been there/done that!). Oh, and yes, by the way, Tim look dashing as always on the blue carpet and can't wait to see his guest starring role in the movie!

Project Runway Season 9 Begins Filming in New York's Battery Park!

DEEEEEsignersssss...

The Black Fashion Brigade: Heidi Klum, Kim Kardashian, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia: photo from Kim Kardashian's Twitter page

Today we got a glimpse of the taping of the new season (Season 9) of Project Runway in a outdoor runway show. It looks to be the taping of the premiere episode in which an unprecedented 20 contestants are vying for the coveted title of America's Next Top Fashion Designer and the $100,000 prize. What a brilliant way to reveal to everyone the 20 contestants selected to participate in this new season.

The taping took place in New York's Battery Park...

La Heidi: Miss Heidi, looked every bit of a Femme Fatale DIVA...in a black one-shoulder princess-seamed Alexander Wang dress, Wolford tights, Jimmy Choo peep-toe pumps and a Barneys NY Belt. LOVING the entire look of "Dominatrix Couture" and I especially love the slicked-back gelled "Robert Palmer Girl" hair. WUNDERBAR!!!

Kim Kardashian was the Guest Celebrity Judge and she was all serious in a black very fitted (of course!) mini dress with flange shoulders (look it up kiddies!) and white side panels; she accessorized with hoop earrings (of course, Part Two). And naturally, her hair and make-up are FLAWLESS...

Nina Garcia was wearing...

Giambatista Valli Fall 2011. Well, of course she is!!!! Leave it to Miss Nina to give it to them!!! She added her own "stamp" on it by adding a skinny belt and cinched in it--LOVE IT!

The Scene at Battery Park, on the "set" of the new season of Project Runway!!

And what would a blog post on Project Runway be without...

TIM GUNN!!! Looking so dapper in his blue window pane plaid suit, gingham tie and pattern pocket square. Tim is really stepping up the style quotient already this season. Love the "hints" of color. Keep it up!!
And...do I spot contestants behind him?! I wonder...

And as always Blogging Project Runway has the ultimate Field Report with tons of photos!

Wall Street Journal Article on The Weinstein Co. Featuring a Photo of Tim Gunn and Nick Verreos

Nick and Tim...Make a "cameo" in the Wall Street Journal

A very good friend of mine was reading today's edition of the Wall Street Journal and she emailed me saying "Did you see the WSJ today? There's a photo of you and Tim Gunn?" Well, of course, I was intrigued. I asked what was the article about? She said it was regarding The Weinstein Co. and how the Weinstein's are "Tapping into TV" and of course, mentioning a little ol' show called Project Runway. I went online (the new way of reading the newspaper n'est pas?) and yes, there it was, the article and a little photo of Tim Gunn and I circa Season 2 back in (I'm not naming the year kids!) (see left). Fun times...I remember him coming to my table discussing the challenge as if it was yesterday. And yes, I still have that blue plaid Western Shirt; it's packed in my "Project Runway Archive Suitcase", in case you are wondering...

Below is the Wall Street Journal article:

MOVIE MOGULS TAP INTO TELEVISION PRODUCTION

By Lauren A. E. Schuker

The Weinstein brothers are making a renewed play for the small screen.

Harvey and Bob Weinstein are among several Hollywood movie makers ramping up television production this year, with 15 shows in development and a commitment to spend more than $10 million per year on the initiative.

The move signals a comeback of sorts for Weinstein Co., which underwent a major debt restructuring this past summer after producing a string of movies that flopped at the box office and depleted much of the $1.2 billion they raised to start the company in 2005. The restructuring, aimed at placing the studio on firmer financial footing, transferred partial control of its movie library to Goldman Sachs Group.

On the left is another fun photo I found--in my photo archives--of Monsieur Gunn and I--from "back in the day"...

Tim Gunn and Nick Verreos Reunite for Season 8 Project Runway Castings!!

Fashion Prom Couple! All Smiles at 9 AM: Tim Gunn and Nick Verreos at Season 8 Project Runway LA Castings

Last week, I had the pleasure of judging--for SIXTH SEASON IN A ROW!!!!--the Castings for Project Runway, Season 8. The producers of the show have been scouring the country for the next Top American Fashion Designer and they have gone to NYC, Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta...and last week was the final Los Angeles Casting at the Mondrian Hotel on Sunset Blvd. Casting Executives "preselected" from thousands and thousands of applications and their picks were the ones that we, the Casting Judges, saw at these sessions. Approximately 50 designers--mostly from California--representing cities (sounds like a Miss USA!) such as San Francisco, San Diego, Palm Springs, and the Los Angeles area of course, came to this final round of casting.
I was so happy to be reunited with Tim Gunn. It's always so wonderful to spend time with Tim since our schedules are so crazy--especially his--that we don't get to see each other much. Vintage Nick and Tim: Nick Verreos gets mentored by Tim Gunn, Season 2 Project Runway

I was also especially excited to see Miss Zoe Glassner, Senior Shopping Editor at Marie Claire, whom I've also had the pleasure of judging past Project Runway castings with. We had a great time seeing all the designers and we scrutinized every seam, every unnecessary ruffle and bow, and every wonky--and not-so wonky hem! No Wonky Seams! LA Casting Panel, Zoe Glassner, Tim Gunn and Nick Verreos

Maybe since it was "the end of the road-trip" for them--Zoe and Tim had NO PATIENCE for "I just wanna do this as a hobby..." and the "I Hate to sew and CANNOT draw...but I wanna be a fashion designer" nonsense--and trust me, they would let them "have it". Sometimes, I was the Paula Abdul of the group--or shall I say the Ellen DeGeneres-- with my "What Tim and Zoe are trying to say is..."LOL! But all in all, even Tim remarked that we may have found one of the "Best" of the entire Season 8 Casting process, here in LA. Well, we shall soon see!

Project Runway Season 8 Casting!!!!!!

Get your Portfolio, Collection and Fierce Self Ready...Season 7 is almost over kiddies. I know, I've missed several of my infamous "Nick Recaps"--I've been busy traveling for my Macy's Appearances and working on my line as well as moving into my new NIKOLAKI Atelier!!! But... Season 8 is casting NOW!!!Who Will Be The Next Project Runway Star: Tim Gunn, Heidi Klum Michael Kors and Nina Garcia, NY Fashion Week

A "Little Birdie" told me that the producers of Project Runway, the ever-so-fabulous Bunin/Murray Productions are getting ready to chose the cast for the nest season of my favorite show Project Runway--

*Do you have what it takes to be America's Next Great Fashion Designer? *Have you always dreamed of showing your collection at New York Fashion Week? *Are you over 21 years of age? *Deadline is April 22nd...BUT DO IT NOW!!!!!

Project Runway Season 7 Nick Verreos Recap: Museum Queens

Museum Queens...One Ego is Better Than Two...and a Homeless Statute of Liberty? This week's episode was the dreaded Project Runway "Team Challenge" where two designers are paired up--randomly (or so they say!)--and the producers and fellow Cameramen get some GOOD TV for y'all. For Season 7, the kids headed to the grand Metropolitan Museum of Art where "Couture Curator", Tim Gunn, stood framed by some of the most beautiful Couture garments from the 20th Century from designers like... Balenciaga (1954-55 Cocoon Silk Faille Coat above, a Gift from the Baroness Philippe de Rothschild), as well as... Madame Gres (silk jersey gown above). It would be interesting to have a "Fashion History Test" with the contestants to see how many of them even knew who Madame Gres was. Just sayin'...The Challenge this week was to design a look worthy of a Museum Couture Piece (with $500!) and then (of course there was a twist)-- they later discovered-- they also had to design a "budget H&M-like version (with $50) of another team's design. I know, I was like "Say what?". I'm sure it sounded good in the "pitch meeting" but it lead to a rather confusing episode; too much packed in just an hour episode for the viewer's mental and visual capacity. Of course, there was conflict when it came to the teams, especially with Kooky Ping and Matinee Idol I'm-an-Actor Jesse. He just wanted to do his job and Ping Wu just wanted to be Kooky--and look for her missing shoes! Mila Hermanovski and her partner Jonathan Peters were also an interesting couple. Jonathan--intelligently enough--let her be "The Boss" and boy was she. I would not want to mess with that severe bob either. Not surprisingly, when it finally came to the Runway Show, it was one great garment and one pretty bad outfit.

To begin with, I liked Jesus Estrada and his partner Amy Sarabi's design: You could TOTALLY tell that it was all--or at least mostly-- Amy. That pleated-fan bolero was spectacular and so Amy's style! I also liked Maya Luz' design...
It was edgy, a modern take on Museum-worthy Couture. I concur with Nina Garcia: The open side was very chic. I can see many people saying "I just don't get it...I would never wear that!" But wear-ability was not really the point for this half of the challenge. The winner ended up being Mila's color-blocked kimono coat and skinny pant look which was very 1960s Courreges/Pierre Cardin with a definite nod to Narciso Nodriguez. To be honest, it wasn't my favorite but leave it to Kors and Garcia (Champions of NY-American sportswear and separates) to chose this. But now, onto the messes:This look from Jesse LeNoir, Ping's team "assistant" was so bland, I almost fell asleep as it came down the runway. Cheap "fast fashion" doesn't have to be boring. It was Banana Republic...from 2001! And Jonathan and Mila's design...Based on Anthony Williams' bad ball gown (what was that bustier???).. It was mainly the severe Baby Doll silhouette, and that gathered tulle accent on the halter neckline that bothered me. I just wanted to get my seam-riper and take that black tulle accent off! Jonathan seems to be more talented than this--maybe it was a time restriction. I have been there huney--did you see my crazy design for the Santino-and-Nick Banana Republic Team Challenge? In other words: I understand.

But of course, Ping's "Homage" to a Homeless Statue of Liberty took the Worst Museum Couture Piece this week. As I said previously, I was surprised she wasn't "auf'ed" last week and we were all just counting down the days until her demise. Ping made for great TV but that can only take you so far in a show that is based on talent and craftsmanship--not to mention 10 cameramen and an entire production crew looking over your shoulder. The lace top looked matronly and the side cowl draping was heavy-handed and was neither Museum-worthy or qualified as anything a woman of this Century would want to own. Maybe a character from HBO's "Rome", but even then, she would be the recently-freed Roman Slave--certainly not the Mistress of the house!
Out with Ping...in with the rest...now onto more important matters: When are we going to see Jesse shirtless? Until next time kiddies.

Nick Verreos Dishes on Project Runway Season 7 Casting Videos...Continued

Judging Buddies: Nick Verreos, Marie Claire's Zoe Glassner and Tim Gunn, LA Castings Season 7 Project Runway

When I first saw the new batch of Project Runway "kids", I thought I knew NONE of them. Or shall I say, no one looked "familiar". Then I began watching these casting videos and realized that I was actually there when many of them came to the casting in Los Angeles and we ended up moving them to the next level! You see, we did these castings so long ago--almost a year ago. I had to "refresh" my memory by viewing these casting videos to remember who these contestants were. Here, I continue with my "Casting Inside Dish":

Christiane King:
After viewing the casting video, I totally remembered Christiane. She had a lovely presence and nice humble aura (no, I-want-to-be-a-Star-I'm-a-Diva attitude). She had tried for Project Runway several times before and obviously was not giving up! I remember that she was originally from Cote D'Ivoire (misspelled in the MyLifetime site btw). The only question we had with her involved fit and a "taste issue". I foresee the latter as maybe being her Achilles Heel. I liked her royal blue architectural shift dress but the rest were a bit, well, Miss Guyana at the Miss World Pageant gown...

Jay Nicolas Sario:
I remember Jay Nicolas, he was a stand-out FOR SURE! His designs were new, modern, fresh and the fit was spot-on. We all loved it. There was a lot of work and a definite eye for detail. I'm not sure if he can replicate all that work within the restricted Project Runway time frame, but who knows. I am excited to see his creations this season. Definitely a favorite for the final "tableau", at least from what he showed us at the casting.

Stay tuned for more of my Nick Verreos: Inside The Casting dish...

Campbell's Design Contest and Tim Gunn!

ATTENTION All Up-and-Coming Fashion Designers and Fashion School Students (and anyone else who might be interested):

Campbell's (I LOVE THEIR SOUPS--have them for lunch almost EVERY DAY--and no, they are not paying me to say this!) have partnered with Tim Gunn for a worthwhile cause and a fabulous contest: The Campbell's adDRESS Your Heart Design Contest.

Design a red dress and if you are the winner, you win a trip to NYC and a chance to walk the red carpet of the Women's Day Red Dress Awards, along with Tim Gunn and a model wearing your winning dress! How amazing is that?My Red Dress: The Amanda/Samantha Harris Gown; NIKOLAKI Spring 2009

If I would enter, I would probably re-make my "Amanda/Samantha Harris" strapless red silk Zibeline gown and maybe have David hand bead a gorgeous "C" (for Campbell's, of course) in Swarovski crystals, to accent it! But this contest isn't for me--it's for you guys!Tim, Nick and Benny...wish you Good Luck!

Click HERE for all the details and how to enter the contest and submit your design. Good Luck from Uncle Nicky, David, our dog Benny---oh and Tim Gunn!

Nick Verreos and Tim Gunn at the Project Runway Season 7 Casting!

Nick Reunites with Tim Gunn--and Zoe Glassner!Judges Get Your Pad and Pencil! Nick Verreos, Zoe Glassner and Tim Gunn at the LA Project Runway Season 7 Castings, W Hotel Los Angeles

This past Monday--yes, on Memorial Day--was the one and only Los Angeles Casting for next season's Project Runway. I know, we haven't even seen Season 6 and we are casting Season 7? Yep, that's how TV works kids! I was privileged enough to have been asked to join Fashion Mentor GOD, Mr. Tim Gunn, as well as the stylish and infectiously friendly Marie Claire shopping editor, Zoe Glassner for another run at finding America's Next Great Designer! The castings took place at the chic W Los Angeles Hotel in Westwood. Soon after I arrived at 9:30 AM, I made the mistake of grabbing my coffee and walking out into the gorgeous W Hotel pool area. It was a mistake because, of course, all I could think of was "Oh wait, I can't use the pool, I've got to work!" Not for Nick: The W Hotel Pool

It certainly was "all work and no play" as Tim, Zoe and I proceeded to see a day's full of aspiring Project Runway contestants, who came as far as Hawaii and Oregon (as well as LA, Palm Springs and the SF Bay Area) for "a chance of a lifetime" at this final LA Castings. Kicking Under The Table: Nick Verreos, Tim Gunn and Zoe Glassner prepare to see the aspiring designers

We saw many talented designers, assistant designers, store owners as well as fresh-out-of- fashion school students--some even from my alma mater, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising/FIDM. There was DRAMA, snippy verbal fights and amusing adulations. I hope they caught it all on film--oh wait, I think there was a camera!! Could there be another "Road To The Runway: Season 7"? If there is, I hope it didn't catch Tim and I kicking each other under the table. Now, speaking of that W Hotel pool, I never got to use it, but Tim, Zoe and I did end our day with some yummy cocktails and spicy nuts at the adjacent W Hotel Whiskey Blue Bar. It was a perfect ending to a productive Memorial Day of Project Runway Season 7 castings.

Web Shout Out

One of my favorite sites, AfterElton, just wrote an article/posting on the supposed "revamping" of Tim Gunn's "Guide To Style" show on Bravo. Someone sent me the link, alerting me to the nice "shout out" from the article and blurb below...
I think it would be rather fun to show up and do my "Dress Like You Mean It" on one of the unsuspecting ladies. But, knowing this Industry, now that I have actually mentioned it and put it in print, that means that, as they say "It ain't ever going to happen".

"One thing I'd definitely like to see on Guide are appearances by past Project Runway designers -- I'm sure the chance to be dressed by Nick Verreos would be just as exciting to Guide to Style's makeover recipients (who, if they know Tim Gunn, must know Project Runway), and Runway fans would enjoy the chance to see their favorite designers in their element."
