Project Runway Season 9 Recaps: Episode 12--The Almost-Halloween Edition!!

Time for my Recap!!!

Last week
, I wrote--about Anya Ayoung-Chee, Joshua McKinley and Viktor Luna--three of this season's Project Runway designers--and how their whole "interaction" and "She Can't Sew But We Can!" drama was like a Project Runway version of Cinderella and her Evil Stepsisters. I dubbed Anya, Cind-Anya-rella:

And Joshua and Viktor...the "Construction Stepsisters":

I know! I LOVE that image of the Cartoon version of the "Cinderella" Stepsisters. Genius. I think that Joshua is the one on the right and Viktor, the black-haired one on the left! As we head toward these final challenges of the season--when it really is getting down to the VERY HIGH STRESS wire--both Joshua and Viktor have been on the "It's NOT FAIR that Anya keeps winning" bandwagon. There has been much kvetching about how she "can't sew" and sometimes even forgets to put a zipper in her dress(!). Hence the name, the "Construction Stepsisters"!

Di Suvero Posing: Project Runway Designers at Governors Island, NYC

But enough of the fairytale--let's get to this week's episode: The designers had to take a ferry to Governors Island in NYC. The Challenge was to create 3 Looks inspired by the island, the art/sculptures and/or the landscape/architecture, on the island.

I was struck by WHAT THEY WORE to this trip. And why did they all look as if they were on their way to a tacky gay nightclub in Atlantic City (see above)? Moving on...

The Fashion:

Anya Ayoung-Chee: Yes, Cind-Anya-rella--"won"--well, she was the first one picked by the judges to move on to show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The judges LOVED her mini-collection of three "intellectually" sophisticated looks. To me, they actually looked very "Bert Keeter" (one of her fellow contestants and her "assistant" on this challenge).

Take a look at one of Anya's looks from last night (left) and one of Bert's from when he showed at the Project Runway Finale at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Show. In case you are not that much of a Project Runway fan and don't know: NINE of the contestants got to show at NY Fashion Week. Look it up...anyway, I don't doubt that these were Anya's designs but when they were turned over to Bert to "assist" with the patternmaking and construction, they suddenly looked liked something he would design. Kudos to her for realizing they made a great team and utilizing his talent.

And now, the "Construction Stepsisters":

Viktor Luna: I loved his mini-collection. Very polished. And yes, very sellable. However, in terms of a "Runway Fashion Scale": About a 6/10. But, well done. Especially that leather cascade front jacket look in the middle. If this was the "Banana Republic Challenge": A WINNER!!!!!

Joshua McKinley: Above were his 3 Mini-Collection looks--(Oh Dear!)

Mean Girls Cheerleader: One of the looks made the model look really THICK (poor thang) and it was very "Mean Girls", which is very apropos. I think individually, the pieces are great and contemporary but together...not so mucheeeyyyy.

And then there was this above. He used a silver Lurex fabric and tried to create a draped gown. It ended up looking very "Statue of Liberty"/Toga Halloween costume.

Kimberly Goldson: I liked the colors--very NOW! But those HIP-enhancing skirts? I appreciate the askew-cowl-and-pleated draping. LOVE. I just don't know if she should continue placing these drapes right in the area a woman DOES NOT--under any circumstances--want any extra "stuff". It's also funny how in the above photo she almost fits into the mini collection! She should incorporated the pants she is wearing in one of the models outfits!

Laura Kathleen: It was the self-professed "St. Louis Princess", designer/contestant Laura Kathleen who unfortunately, got the boot this week. She was OBSESSED with this circle fabric she found at Mood (because she was inspired by circle shapes on Governors Island) and she decided (against Monsieur Gunn's objections) to go CIRCLE KRAZEE. But it wasn't the circle looks that did her "OUT". It was:

This hastily put-together dress (the one on the right, in case you are confused), which made the judges go "Uh, no". Let's start with the iridescent organza-like fabrication. Then , the bad side-breast fit. And well, it also looked like a bad "Toga Girl" costume for Halloween. PS: What. Is. Up. With. All. The. Halloween. Costume. References? Very timely. And I have to say, I kinda like the tacky dress on the left better...The tacki-licious black shoes and even TACKIER bra-strap tan line, is what REALLY makes it!!!

OK, enough for now--Here's my Recap of this week's Project Runway Episode:

Cind-Anya-rella and Her Two Construction Stepsister

Coming Soon to a Theater Near You: “Cind-Anya-rella and her Construction Stepsisters.” Starring “Cind-Anya-rella” – the former beauty queen who just learned how to sew; her two “Construction Stepsisters,” Viktor and Joshua; and finally, the two supporting “Design Damsels,” Kimberly and Laura. How will this movie end? Stay tuned …

Boxers and Pumps
As the episode begins we are told that it is the final challenge, the outcome of which decides who will show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The five remaining designers head out for a ferry trip to Governors Island. Kimberly is wearing her highest pumps, while Anya is sporting a pair of fur Uggs (?) and Joshua, bless his little heart, is wearing printed boxer shorts and combat boots! In those getups, did they think they were going to a gay club in Atlantic City? Anyhow, Tim Gunn is there, along with Leslie Koch, president of The Trust for Governors Island, and John Stern, president of the Storm King Art Center.

What, No Standard Hotel Rooftop Pool Bar at Governors Island?
Gunn announces the final challenge: to create three looks that show a “range” (meaning a dress, pants outfit, a skirt ensemble, etc.) inspired by the island, its landscape, architecture and/or the fabulous Mark di Suvero sculptures on the island. They have two days and a $500 budget (Lordy!). After 30 minutes exploring the island, Joshua realizes that there is no Standard Hotel with a Rooftop Pool, so he ends up going to a church for his inspiration. Kimberly decides to be motivated by one of the di Suvero sculptures, entitled “New Beginning.” Anya is drawn to the positive/negative spaces of the artwork. Laura is inspired by circles. And Viktor likes the juxtaposition of the NYC metropolis vs. the island’s scenery...

TV Guide Network The Fashion Team: Nick Verreos Red Carpet Naughty Trick Or Treating!!

Trick...or Fashion Treat!
Trashy Threesome: TV Guide Network's The Fashion Team Nick Verreos, Jen Rade and Lawrence Zarian at Trashy Lingerie, West Hollywood

On this week's TV Guide Network's The Fashion Team, we went "naughty" Trick Or Treating...at West Hollywood's iconic Trashy Lingerie store on La Cienega Blvd.
For our "Hot or Not" segment, stylist Jen Rade, Lawrence Zarian and I discussed who looked their best on the red carpet and those stars who didn't make our grade.

Pink Fantasy: Trashy Lingerie West Hollywood

I have been living in Los Angeles for over 20 years (I came here when I 5--LOL!) and this was my first time at Trashy Lingerie! Can you believe it? My NIKOLAKI partner David Paul, who worked as a Wardrobe Stylist and Costumer for YEARS, had of course been there many a time but yes, I was a Trashy Lingerie Virgin...until now! It is so "old school" up in there. You need to be a Member first of all, to shop there. And they have everyone on Roll O Dex cards, right at the entrance! That is SO 1993, I love it!

Pleather Apron: Naughty Costumes at Trashy Lingerie West Hollywood

The place is stocked from wall to wall with costumes--from naughty maids, nurses and everything in between, as well as all the accessories you will ever need for your Lingerie Fantasies. There's so much boning, pasties, rick-rack trim and stretch nylon in there that it could make even a Playboy Bunny Centerfold blush with excitement!

Top Hat Diva: Nick Verreos at Trashy Lingerie West Hollywood

Needless to say, I didn't dress up in any costume for my TVGN Fashion Team segment (I said I would!) but I did don a mini feathered top hat--to finish off my TopMan jacket and Etro pocket scarf ensemble.

Our Fashion Team Halloween Segment debuted yesterday--Sunday--Oct 31st on the TV Guide Network at 5PM--You can click HERE for the rest of the airing times.

Hope you all had a Happy (Fashionable) Halloween Kids!

Nick Verreos goes Trick or Treating @ Heidi's Halloween Party!!

Jai Ho! Happy Halloween From Heidi's Halloween Bash!Namaste Modelinia: Nick Verreos covering Heidi Klum's Halloween for Modelinia.com

Oh boy oh boy, last night was Halloween (I'm still trying to remove the black eyeliner from my eyes!). I was asked to do red carpet "coverage" at Heidi Klum's Halloween Party for the model website, Modelinia.com. The party was being held at the newly opened West Hollywood nightclub Voyeur and sponsored by MSN and Sky Vodka. Fun Fact: Voyeur used to be a club called Peanuts as well as Illusions, where you would see the FIERCEST Drag Queens (and some not so fierce). I couldn't believe that Heidi was even hosting this annual bash since, it was just a little over three weeks ago that she gave birth to her second daughter. But, lo and behold, I got the call and the invitation to cover it.
My Costume:Love Child Meets Bollywood: Raymundo Baltazar and Nick Verreos attend Heidi Klum's Halloween Party

Naturally I could not just buy a Halloween costume out of a bag from Hollywood Toys and Costumes: I had to make it! I decided that both my partner David and I would be a cross between a "Gay Bollywood Couple Getting Married" and "Ali Baba Couture". Now, before I get any angry emails/comments here from the entire Indian Subcontinent, I was not trying to be disrespectful to Bollywood, India or the Middle East, but in fact I am playing homage to it. I have always loved the colors, fancifulness and all-out drama of Bollywood and old Hollywood "Ali-Baba" films, and I thought it would be fun and fabulous to re-create it.Where's Aishwarya? Nick Verreos and David Paul in their "Nikolaki" custom costumes

David and I both designed the costumes (David after all has a Master's in Costume Design), I made the patterns, and he SEWED EVERYTHING!!! We could have had one of our seamstresses make them but he wanted to do it. Our costumes consisted of fitted silk brocade jackets with Swarovski crystals, gold silk lurex drop-crotch "Harem Pants", silk waist cummerbunds and turbans (David's turban took over 6 yards!). To finish our Halloween costumes, we went to Artesia's "Little India" and purchased gold brocade slippers and jewelry.
The Red Carpet:Perez GaGa: Perez Hilton as Lady GaGa and Nick Verreos

Halloween in LA is always CRAZY. It took us 1 1/2 hours to drive from Downtown LA to the party location (normally a 20-30 minute hop even in LA traffic). I could have been in Palm Springs in that time! The Santa Monica Blvd traffic was at a complete standstill (and I was already about an hour late) when David just had me get out of the car and I made a mad 7-block dash (yes, in my Harem pants and Turban) to the club. Once there-- and almost a cardiac arrest later--I positioned myself into the reporter's "line" and went to work. The Real Lady GaGa

First up was Mario Lavendeira "Perez Hilton". He showed up as Lady GaGa--all 6 ft 2" of him. His ensemble consisted of black stiletto platforms, fishnets and black fitted strapless corseted dress with "Disco Ball" bust accent. The costume was EXACT to one she has worn on stage before. He actually had the Haus of GaGa replicate the costume for him. It was great to say "hello" to Kelly Osborne who came along with her cutie (and gushingly sweet!) boyfriend, Luke Squirrel. They were dressed as "Sunday Brunch" or eggs (Kelly) and bacon (Luke).Couples was the "Theme of the Night": Project Runway Season 3 Winner, LA designer Jeffrey Sebelia showed up with his girlfriend, Cassandra Church, as Edgar Allen Poe and The Raven. Also on the red carpet were Paris Hilton and her HOT boyfriend, Doug Reinhardt. They were both dressed as the Tooth Fairy, or at least Doug was. Paris was in full DIVA mode, looking fabulous in a very Folies Bergere inspired Costume. Finally at around 11 PM, after much wait (and I'm sure stuck in the HORRIFIC West Hollywood traffic!), Heidi and Seal arrived. The crowd went crazy as they debuted their costumes: Black feathered vultures inspired by a Japanese Anime Cartoon Movie called Howl's Moving Castle by Artist Hayao Miyazaki. Kissing Beaks: Seal and Heidi on the red carpet of their Halloween Party

As I interviewed Heidi on the red carpet, she explained how her mom had to sew Velcro in the costume right before she left so she could use the bathroom! (love that!). She asked me "Why don't you deeeeesigners ever think of these things???". Love her! She also reassured me that the feathers were not real (so PETA keep away!) and actually made of vinyl/plastic.

Inside Heidi's Halloween:This Is Project Runway: Heidi Klum (yes that's her!), Raymundo Baltazar and Nick Verreos

The nightclub was packed and very hard to move through (I guess the LA Fire Marshall must have been on vacation). Once inside, David and I ran into my Project Runway alumn, Raymundo Baltazar, who was dressed as a Hippie Love Child. We proceeded to see if we could A) Get some drinks, B) check out all the costumes at the party and C) find a way to say "helloooooo" to Miss Heidi. We did all three! While making our way through, I spotted one of my favorite singers, Jordin Sparks, who was a "spooky" Dorothy from Wizard of Oz (above photo) and...one guest dressed as Karl Lagerfeld while his friend came as a quilted Chanel Purse. You don't see it but next to them was another person in a red tweed Chanel Suit. I spotted TWO Karl Lagerfeld's but not ONE Michael Kors or Tim Gunn. Maybe I didn't look hard enough.

Parting Shot:
Couple of the Night: Nick Verreos and Steven Cojocaru

As I was about to leave, I had to stop and get a photo of Steven Cojocaru "Cojo" (from Entertainment Tonight), who was HILARIOUS as Khloe Kardashian in her Wedding Gown--BIG ring, BIG hair, tacky polyester gown and garter belt. I finally found the one woMAN who might be my perfect Gay Bollywood Bride! Very SPOOKY--Happy Halloween kiddies!
