New Year's Resolution: Goodbye McDonald's

It's salty, full of fat and sugar and can raise your cholesterol through the roof but unfortunately it's also very tasty and satisfying. Normally I don't believe in New Year's Resolutions, instead I try to improve upon myself for the month of January to set the tone for the busy year ahead and make time to do the usual tasks. Today was the last day of 2011; I spent the day doing laundry, cleaning under and around my bed and taking out as many as three garbage bags of rubbish from paraphernalia collected under my bed. I had also meant to watch three episodes of Doctor Who in a row while sitting on the exercise bike and pumping the pedals non-stop but after cleaning so much dust I had the keen sense of feeling filthy and had to take a prompt shower.

2011, the year that was held many promising events for me in my final year of high school. As a senior student and at the top of the food chain in the school grounds, there were many privileges my year level was blessed with such as exclusive costume days and the hyped up formal I think I reached my academic potential and was blessed with a SAT/ A Level/ ATAR score that will hopefully allow me into my institute of choice. I studied more than thirty hours a week and on rare occasions in the lead up to exams, forty and even fifty hours a week. Last year was all about hard work and preparation. This coming year, 2012 will be about socialising, becoming the person I want to be and being happy studying Science at Melbourne University.

While I have already managed to curb my fetish for fast foods and successfully have declined my mother's offer for artery clogging burgers and fries, my will has not been of iron and even looking at these photographs now makes me want to hurl myself at the fridge. Although, in my defence, my last meal was four hours ago and since then I have only enjoyed drinking water. Tomorrow and in the coming week ahead I hope to become an avid user of the exercise bike as well as lose the weight I have managed to put on since Christmas. I don't exactly feel good since I ate a very large portion of salad today and have managed to put on a kilogram since last night. A banana, two pieces of toast, smoked chicken slices with salad and coleslaw as well as a large serving of curry isn't exactly what I would call unhealthy food but the scales once again seem to disagree with me.

If I have the mindset of treating fast food as an illicit drug, maybe I will have a better job of avoiding it. Considering the awful effects pointed out by Morgan Spurlock's documentary 'Supersize Me', it's not too far to say that when over used and abused, fast food can be as damaging as say, smoking or alcohol.
A promising prospect on the horizon for 2012 along with less days of study is the opportunity to become a better basketball referee and take on at least one more shift, if not two. Maybe that will be able to counter any food I eat as well as earn money to buy pretty things and save up for Canada. The past year was brilliant, and I was blessed to share it with so many friends as well as loved ones and I hope 2012 can only be bigger and better, not just for me but for all of us. Also, if the world didn't end, that would be brilliant.

Donuts

A tell-tale sign of when my body registers that it's on holidays is when apart from my tendency to slack off, sleep-in and not study as hard as I had all year is the craving of junk food and eating out unhealthy snacks. Right now I'm craving the sweet pastry and baked goodness a donut offers, I don't even mind that it's missing a bit of donut and there's a hole in the middle! I'd love to wrap my tongue around some sticky icing in a wild and wonderful colour as well as enjoy feeling the sprinkles fall off my lip as the stick to me after the first bite.

At the risk of being disowned by my friends I am going to make the bold statement that donuts are better looking and tasting then fairy bread. There's something attractive about the imperfect shape of a cirle and the decoration of small sprinkles attached to the icing I'm craving and feasting my eyes on lately.

A romantic gesture I'd love to recieve one Valentine's Day is being gifted a box of fancy donuts. A few years ago some boutique donuts featured in the MX, the popular metropolitan and free newsprint for the inner city area in Melbourne which featured an array of delicious looking donuts. They even had heart shaped holes in the middle of them to be extra festive.

I've been reasonably good and lost maybe three or four kilograms when I was on break from scheduled classes and studying for exams but I think all the weight I have lost is coming back on with an unhealthy diet and snacking on what I can when on my break from the world of retail. It's just hard to find motivation sometimes when all I can think about is the yummy and sweet textures of a donut and my stomach has more room for food. They're also so pretty to look at, and unlike a macaroon come with a much better price tag attached to them. I'll just have to deal with looking at these mouth-watering pictures and eating fruit instead.

Sweet Treat

Maybe candles aren’t edible themselves but when I see them dripped and moulded to fit the fingers above, I’m reminded of the sweet smell of smoke mixed with cheesecake from the ghosts’ of birthdays past. I’ve always wanted very lovely and dribbly candles, but whenever I light them for Christmas they end up a sordid mess and the aromatic candle I received for my birthday barely has a flame when it’s lit. The aromatic candle smells lovely even without being burnt. The best thing about small little candles is that they are associated with lovely cakes but look almost like wet and drippy ice cream.

Whenever I suffer from bitter thoughts and can’t help but feel negative- instead I look at something sweet to feed my inner-child and imagine all the lovely tastes and textures melting in my mouth. This happy little collection of ice creams and cakes is candy for the eyes as well as hungry tummies. I would be in the mood for such sweet treats were it not for snacking constantly on chips while on holidays with my friends on Schoolies as well as watching Friends and movies.

My mouth is watering at all the sweet and sugary goodness combined with the soft-focus photography and the backgrounds. There’s a range of beaches, tourist hot-spots and specialty ice cream shops that make my long for warmer weather as well as visiting vacation places. Ice creams also have that popular culture association of young teenagers immersed in puppy love walking along the boardwalk with a Ferris wheel in the distance. I love that atmosphere can be enhanced by the music, but in this case food and memories created by a certain smell and a feeling of sand between your toes.

Melted ice-cream like those pictured above and softened waffle cones are delicious; but I can never be bothered paying additional costs to get a waffle cone. I love the rich flavour of the ice cream I ate the other day, I bought Oreo ice-cream infused with a rich vanilla. It was sweet and a little filling as well for an ice-cream with only one scoop. I don’t enjoy a single flavour of ice cream usually unless there’s an interesting texture of the ice cream like biscuits in small pieces.

The sweet and sugared heart on the ice cream which looks soft and melted reminds me of the unromantic Valentine’s days I spent at school day dreaming out the window. I associate ice cream and the sweet flavour with such romantic pleasures. Most of those romantic pleasures are things I have not yet enjoyed myself.

Sculpted ice cream: I’m surprised there’s no one else in the photograph posing coyly and licking the melting iced desert- or lying on the grass beneath the largest ice cream dripping with a hopeful mouth open to capture the falling ice cream. The shape of the cones seems very old like a 1940’s design.

I wonder what it would be like to be the dynamic power couple Sandy and Danny Zuko charing a milkshake together behind a menu. I’ve never really had the desire to recreate such a corny cliché myself but the milkshakes pictured below look so delicious, I may be enticed by the presentation of the food. It would be lovely if I had my boyfriend with me- although he hates photographs of himself.
